During the closing stages of the match, Orton delivered an RKO to McAfee, effectively removing him from the equation. Prior to the match, McAfee had stated that he would never appear on a wrestling show again if Orton did not win his 15th World Championship at WrestleMania.
With Orton’s loss to Rhodes, it appears that McAfee is finished with WWE, something he has recently confirmed. Previously, there were reports of a planned match featuring Randy Orton and Pat McAfee against Cody Rhodes and Jelly Roll at Backlash on May 9. However, given the recent events, that match now seems unlikely.
According to Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, sources within WWE indicated that the overwhelmingly negative reaction to Pat McAfee’s involvement prompted WWE to pull back from this storyline. Meltzer also mentioned that while Jelly Roll was present and participated, he was not involved in the match’s finish, and there was nothing to suggest that a tag team match was in the works.
Bodyslam+ had previously reported that Orton was originally expected to win his 15th WWE World Championship at WrestleMania 42 on Saturday, but plans changed in the weeks leading up to the event.
