Despite losing the contest, Fatu repeatedly trapped Reigns in the Tongan Death Grip. When officials attempted to intervene, Fatu executed a Samoan Drop on referee Shaun Bennett and attacked several others, including Shane Helms and Raw General Manager Adam Pearce.
Fatu initially retreated up the entrance ramp but returned to the ring to apply the submission hold on Reigns once more. He closed the broadcast standing over the fallen champion while raising the title belt.
Announcer Michael Cole stated on the broadcast that Fatu’s pursuit of the championship may not be over.
The match itself featured heavy physicality from the opening bell. Fatu took early control by landing a suicide dive and applying the Tongan Death Grip on the outside to drive Reigns into the ring post.
Reigns responded by aggressively targeting Fatu’s hand and arm to neutralize the submission hold.
Both men survived major offensive maneuvers throughout the contest. Fatu emphatically kicked out of an early Superman Punch after a one-count, and later powerbombed Reigns through the ringside announce desk.
During the closing sequence, Reigns backed Fatu into the corner, accidentally knocking down the referee. As the two struggled, a turnbuckle pad was torn off.
Fatu locked in the Tongan Death Grip, but Reigns broke the hold by driving his challenger into the exposed steel. Reigns immediately followed up with a spear to secure the pinfall and retain his championship.
